5V Voltage Regulator Upgrade for ZX Spectrum / ZX81 | 7805 Replacement
Artikel number VAR8053
This 5V voltage regulator upgrade is designed for classic Sinclair ZX Spectrum and ZX81 computers and replaces the original, comparatively inefficient 7805 linear voltage regulator.
Traditional 7805 regulators reduce the input voltage to 5V using linear regulation. The excess energy is largely converted into heat, which is why the original voltage regulator and heatsink in many classic computers can become noticeably hot during operation.
This modern upgrade instead uses a step-down switching regulator / buck converter design. The required 5V supply voltage is generated more efficiently, resulting in significantly less energy being converted into unwanted heat.
The result is a stable 5V power supply with considerably reduced heat generation.
The compact three-pin design is intended as a replacement for the existing 7805 regulator, making it a practical upgrade when repairing, restoring or modernising the power supply of a classic Sinclair computer.
Ideal for ZX Spectrum and ZX81 repair and restoration projects.

Modern Replacement for the 7805
The classic 7805 is a linear voltage regulator. The difference between the input and output voltage is largely dissipated as heat.
This is why noticeable heating of the original voltage regulator is normal in classic computers such as the ZX Spectrum and ZX81.
A modern switching regulator operates much more efficiently and generates the required 5V output voltage with considerably lower power losses.
This results in significantly less heat during operation.
Reduced Heat Generation
One of the main advantages of this upgrade is the reduced heat generation.
Lower power loss at the voltage regulator means less unnecessary heat inside the computer.
This is particularly useful for decades-old retro hardware, where reducing unnecessary thermal stress can be beneficial for the surrounding components and the system as a whole.
Stable 5V Power Supply
The module provides a regulated 5V output voltage for the computer.
A stable power supply is important for reliable operation of digital electronic components.
This upgrade therefore combines modern, efficient voltage conversion with the 5V supply required by the classic computer.
Installation
The module is designed as a replacement for the existing 7805 voltage regulator.
The original regulator must be desoldered from the circuit board and the new 5V regulator module installed in its place.
Installation therefore requires:
• Opening the computer
• Accessing the mainboard
• Desoldering the existing 7805 regulator
• Soldering the new 5V regulator module into place
• Checking pinout and installation orientation
• Checking the output voltage after installation
Suitable soldering skills and equipment are required.
Compatibility
✅ Suitable for:
• Sinclair ZX Spectrum with corresponding 7805-based 5V power regulation
• Sinclair ZX81 with corresponding 7805-based 5V power regulation
The module is intended as a modern replacement for the original 5V linear voltage regulator.
⚠️ Always compare the pinout and installation orientation of the original regulator with the replacement module before installation.
Ideal For
• Replacing a defective 5V regulator
• ZX Spectrum restoration
• ZX81 restoration
• Power supply upgrades
• Reducing heat generation
• Replacing an ageing 7805 regulator
• Retro computer repairs
• Classic Sinclair computer upgrades
⚙️ Technical Specifications

⚠️ Please Note
Installation requires soldering work on the mainboard and should only be carried out by someone with suitable experience.
Before powering on the computer, carefully check the pinout, installation orientation and solder joints. After installation, we recommend checking the 5V output with a multimeter before normal operation.
The module provides the required 5V power regulation, but replacing the regulator will not necessarily resolve faults caused by other components in the computer's power supply circuit.
