The ZXUITAPE XL is a modern virtual cassette player for classic Sinclair and other retro computers. Instead of using an old cassette recorder, games and programs can be conveniently loaded as files from a MicroSD card.

The ZXUITAPE XL connects via an audio cable to the input normally used for a traditional cassette recorder. The device converts the stored files into the corresponding audio signal, which the computer reads just like data from a conventional cassette tape.

This allows TZX and TAP files to be used without requiring original cassette tapes or a cassette recorder that may now be several decades old.

Simply copy your favourite games or applications to a suitable MicroSD card, insert the card into the ZXUITAPE XL and select the desired file using the integrated display.

The ZXUITAPE XL is particularly suitable for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, ZX80 and ZX81. Depending on the installed firmware, additional file formats supported by MaxDuino can also be used with other compatible retro computers.

Load Games & Programs from MicroSD

Instead of loading programs from a traditional audio cassette, the corresponding files are stored on a MicroSD card.

For example, simply copy the desired game or application in TZX or TAP format to the memory card.

The required file can then be selected on the ZXUITAPE XL and played back. The generated audio signal is transferred through the audio cable to the tape input of the retro computer.

For the computer, the loading process works in a similar way to loading from a traditional cassette – except that the signal is generated from a digital file stored on the MicroSD card.

Replacement for a Traditional Cassette Recorder

Many classic home computers originally used audio cassette tapes for loading and saving software.

After several decades, original cassette tapes and cassette recorders may suffer from worn belts, dirty tape heads, unstable tape speeds and other age-related problems.

The ZXUITAPE XL allows compatible software files to be played back without requiring a traditional cassette recorder.

The computer itself continues to use its normal tape/audio input.

Integrated Display

The ZXUITAPE XL features an integrated display.

The display makes it easier to navigate through and select files stored on the MicroSD card.

Connection & Use

The ZXUITAPE XL connects to the tape/cassette audio input of the retro computer using a suitable audio cable.

Select the required file on the device and start playback.

The computer receives the generated audio signal in the same way it would normally receive the signal from a traditional cassette recorder.

The exact LOAD command and loading procedure depend on the computer being used.

⚠️ Playback Only – No Recording Function

The ZXUITAPE XL does not provide a recording function.

This means:

✅ Games and programs can be loaded from the MicroSD card to the computer.

❌ Programs or data from the computer cannot be recorded as new tape files onto the MicroSD card using the ZXUITAPE XL.

Traditional or alternative methods must therefore still be used when saving or recording data.
